When you decide where you want to go on your next fishing trip in the summer months it is time to do some pre-planning. If you want to save precious fishing time then you need to construct a plan for the start of your fishing trip. I have provide you below some simple walleye fishing tips for fishing walleye live baits in the summer..

#1 Pick up a topographical map of the area you plan to fish.

Identify on the map all the weed bed areas. Next circle any weed bed areas that have a significant depth drop off of more than 3 feet , adjacent to the weed bed area. These areas can be walleye fishing sweet spots with the right weather conditions.

#2 Contact a local bait shop.

A key question to ask , is “What is the best live bait choice if I am going to be walleye fishing? Make sure you specify to the bait dealer the time of year you will be fishing. It is surprising to me how many walleye anglers bypass this simple very important step.

#3 Attach shinny spinner blades and rattles to your live bait walleye fishing rigs.

No matter what water I am fishing I have had very good luck using flashing spinner blades and small rattles attached right above my walleye baits about 6 to 12 inches.

# 4 Suggested live baits for walleye fishing:

As a rule of thumb, the norm suggested live bait for summer walleye fishing is either night crawlers or ribbon leaches. Your conversation on a local fishing chat room or from a local bait dealer may change the norm. They may know some specific tips to fish the local area that may be different from the norm. In the spring the norm usually is walleye minnows. Depending on the time you plan to fish the area minnows that are caught from the local waters still may be a viable live bait option in the summer months also.

#5 Weather conditions:

5a When the day is sunny and there is no wave chop, head to the weed beds! Go deep into the beds and look for open pockets . Vertical jig using a ¼” oz lead head jig tipped with a ribbon leach or large night crawler. Attach bright spinner blades and line rattles if needed. These areas are hard to fish, but surprisingly productive. I pulled a 6 lb walleye out of one of these pockets.

5b If there are waves then head directly to the weed bed areas you circled on your topographical map. Back troll or drift parallel to the weed bed so your bait drifts within 5ft of the edge of the weed beds. Use a bottom bouncing rig here. Make sure you attach spinner blades and a line rattle approximately 12 inches above your bait. These area’s can be walleye fishing honey holes if the weather is right.

Planer boards are simply great when you’re in shallow or clear and you want to get your bait as far away from your boat as possible. They’re also great if you’re fishing for walleye when they’re suspended or congregating extremely close to shore. Do not get the idea that to be a successful walleye fisherman that you need to fish with planner boards, that is not the case you can be very successful without them. The thing is planner boards for walleye add a new dimension to your walleye fishing arsenal.

When running boards, a very important thing to consider is the stability of your boards. A planer board should be able to plane smoothly in rough spots, and should be able to perform well at the slower speeds that are often used while trolling for walleye. One of the best walleye baits to use while running planer boards are crankbaits. You need to run at a slower speed to be successful when using crankbaits for walleye. By now you have figured out that you need to have your planer boards fine tuned for slower speeds when you are fishing for walleye because the majority of your time will be spent trolling for walleye at slower speeds. Keeping your boards in top shape will help them to be able to plane smoothly and perform very well at these slow speeds.

When you are fishing with planerboards it is important to remember that one set depth will not always work. Keep close attention to your depthfinder and fish finder to identify where to set your depths. Experimentation is very important to find your walleye catching sweet spot.

Lets talk walleye fishing tackle while using your boards. You need to have snap weights when you put your tackle list together. They make it very simple place your weights and you will only have to do it one time. If you need to change weights all you have to do is press and release to ad a different weight.This saves you time out on the water.

A very common question is “how far back should your weight and bait be from the planer board?” This will depend on the aggression of the fish on the day you are fishing. if the walleyes are very aggressive and they are attacking your walleye baits then keep your baits closer to the boards,as close as 15ft. On slow days where the walleyes are in a picky mood you need to place your weight and walleye baits farther back as much as 40 feet. When you start out for the day, try going 40 feet back from the planer board with your weight and about 40 feet back from your weight with the lure. This will make adjustments easy, and you’ll be starting at a good mid-point.

Here is another common question: “what kind of walleye fishing equipment will I need to get started fishing with planerboards?” A good basic planer board equipment package would consist of (2) planerbaords, (2) rod holders, (2) sets of snap weights, and (2) Walleye fishing trolling rod and reel combos. It is a real plus if the reels have line counters included. The line test should be 10 to 12 lbs.

When you are fishing for walleye the weather has the most influence where walleyes will be located and how active they will be feeding.For example if it is a warm and sunny day walleyes will head for deeper waters or underwater structure to stay cool, and shield their light sensitive eyes. If it is a nice sunny day with very little wind, do your fishing for walleye in deep water, in the thick weed beds or at underwater structure points because the surface water will be much to warm.

If when you get out on the water the sun is bright overhead but there is a good wave chop, you will find walleye anywhere. The waves cool and turn the water and they redirect the suns rays. One of the very best times to catch your walleye limit is right before a storm when the sky is dark and overcast and the waves are active. Walleyes tend to become very aggressive at these times. The walleye fish is a very unpredictable species of species to fish for sometimes. Using the weather conditions of any particular day is a good way to decide on your walleye fishing starting point for the day.

The weather is just one indicator when you are trying to locate walleye. It is by no means always 100%. You should still use your GPS fishing finder also. But if you use these two methods to put you on fish you can save time and increase your chances of getting your walleye catch limit. But remember the walleye species may surprise you . Do not depend 100% on these two walleye fishing indicators to put you on fish. Be prepared to fish in other areas if these two indicators fail. Like I have said walleye can be very finicky and unpredictable fish at times. I think this one of the reasons they are one of the most sought after game fish.

As a rule of thumb walleye move closer to shore and into shallow water in the cooler months and farther out to deep water in the summer months, but remember that walleye are a very unpredictable fish and I have caught them close to shore in the dead of summer. Normally, Walleyes will move when there is a drop in water temperatures and there is a change in weather conditions such as a storm moving in or a overcast cold day, and by all means use these indicators for locating fish, just don’t depend on these indicators 100% be prepared to use other methods to fish for walleye if necessary.

Fishing for bass can provide some of the most exciting fly fishing in the country. More people probably fish for largemouth bass than any other species. The wide distribution of bass may account for its popularity with fishermen. Largemouth bass can be found from southern Canada to South America. Smallmouth bass are also excellent for fly fishing, but they prefer slightly cooler waters and are not widespread as the largemouth variety.

Generally, the warmer the water, the larger the bass will grow. For example, a four or five pound bass may be large for a northern lake, but warmer southern waters regularly produce fish weighing 10 pounds or more. The temperature of the water is a key factor in the food available for bass to eat.

The best time to fish for bass is usually just after the bass have spawned. This will also depend on water temperatures. For largemouth bass, spawning takes place when the water temperatures reached the low to mid-60s. In a cold climate state like Michigan, bass may spawn in June, while a warmer state like Lousiana spawning may start in February.

The behavior of the largemouth bass is also influenced considerably by the  temperature at the top of the water. On hot summer days, they usually feed during the early morning hours and then again during the last few hours of daylight, when the sun isn’t as bright and the water temperature is cooler. Bass are generally found in areas of the water that have a lot of vegetation and cover. They spend a lot of time near the water’s edge among the grasses, reeds, and other plants.

Many fly fishermen use bass bugs and poppers when fishing for largemouth bass. Poppers were designed as a surface lure to be skipped across the top of the water in a series of quick retrieves. Other good fly patterns for largemouth bass or the Muddler Minnow and the Wooly Worm. There are some fly fishermen that prefer to use streamers and bucktail.

You use different fly fishing techniques for bass than for trout. Poppers are worked not only for their appearance but also for their sound. Generally, when a fly is cast for bass it should be allowed to remain unmoving for a longer period of time than for trout. It is estimated that 60% of bass strikes are made on a still fly. Bass tend to inspect your fly for some time before making the decision whether to take it or not.

At times, fly fishermen like to tease the bass with repeated casts over the area where they think he’s hiding. Teasing can sometimes be a very effective method in bringing a lazy fish up for a strike when nothing else seems to work.

To Improve as a crappie fisherman it is very important that you learn to fish with artificial crappie baits. 1c. – The body (is the plastic material that is slid over the hook shank up to the head and has dozens of different colors, and body styles.)

#2 What are the different types of Jigs Used For Crappie Fishing?

2.a Bait fish or insect Imitation jigs:

The marabou jig for crappies range in size from 1/32 oz up to 1/4oz and is made of a lead head with or with out a spinner blade. The hook is enclosed in a hair like or feather looking material on the shank up to the head. These jigs are the most commonly used to imitate either insects or bait fish.

2.a-1 A “tube” with a jig head is another common jig combination used to imitate a wounded bait fish. The tube is manufactured to have multiple tentacles that dart through the water, and slides up the shank of the hook to the head. These jigs come in many different colors and range in size from 1/64oz to 1/4oz.

2.b Minnow or shad imitation jig:

These jigs are made up of a body made of plastic designed to look like different kinds of minnows, or bait fish that slide up the shank of the hook to the head. These bait fish or minnow and shad imitations are available in different sizes and colors.

2.c Grub or Maggot imitation jig:

This crappie fishing jig is designed to imitate a insect grub, or maggot. Their construction is of a variety of different color plastic molded together with different color real or artificial hair, or feathers. The molded combination is slid up the hook shank touching the head. These jigs come in a Varity of sizes the most common to be in the smaller sizes of 1/64 to 1/32oz.

#3 The best way to tie your crappie fishing jig.

A excellent knot to use when tying your crappie fishing jigs is called the trilene knot. Follow the steps below to tie the trilene knot.

3.a Run approximately 6 inches of line through the eyelet in the crappie jig’s hook. Loop it around and pass it through the eyelet again. Pull on the line until you reach a small ¼ inch to ½ inch diameter.

3.b Wrap the end of the line around the standing line 6 times.

3.c Pass the end of the line back through the loop, and then pull the line snug tight by pulling the standing line, and the hook in opposite directions.

3.d Trim the left over tag about ¼ inch from the hook.
